NEHU appoints Pro-VCs for Shillong, Tura campuses

Shillong, Nov 13: Coming under pressure due to indefinite hunger strike by students entering nine days, the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) authorities have appointed pro-vice-chancellors for Tura and Shillong campuses, one of the key demands of the agitators.

Prof Sherwin May Sungoh from Department of Education has been appointed as Pro-VC of NEHU Shillong Campus and Dr Fameline K Marak from Department of Garo as Pro-VC of NEHU Tura Campus.

Under fire NEHU vice-chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla issued the appointment orders on Wednesday night with effect from November 13, 2024. However, the appointments are subject to approval by the Executive Council.

The demand for Pro-VCs for Shillong and Tura campuses were raised by students, teaching and non-teaching staff as well as various pressure groups.

Besides appointment of the Pro-VCs, the protesters led by NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU have been demanding resignation of the VC and termination of registrar and deputy registrar due to their “illegal” appointment.

Till filing of this report, NEHUSU and KSU NEHU unit were holding a meeting to discuss the appointment of Pro-VCs and their future course of action.

The Executive Council is also expected to hold a meeting to discuss the issue on Thursday.
