NEHU professor held for bribery

Shillong, June 12: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has caught red handed a professor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong while accepting bribe for awarding supply contracts of laboratory equipment to a private firm.

Nirmalendu Saha, the professor of Zoology and also dean of School of Life Sciences, was caught while accepting Rs 3.43 lakh from one Pranjal Sharma, proprietor of a Guwahati-based firm, at Guwahati University Guest House, CBI Guwahati said in a statement.

The illegal transaction was made for awarding supply orders of scientific equipment, laboratory items etc., and clearance of bills thereof, it said.

The CBI, which registered a case in this regard on Wednesday, said a trap was laid following information about collusion between the duo and unknown others indulging in corrupt and illegal practices in awarding contracts.

Further, the CBI conducted search at two palaces leading to recovery of incriminating documents.
