NEHU students demand appointment of acting VC

Shillong, Mar 21: The North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) have demanded for immediate appointment of a senior most professor as acting vice-chancellor (VC) of the university, and remained firm on opposing “remote” functioning of Prof PS Shukla as the VC.

The NEHUSU demand came in the wake of expiry of a 48-hour ultimatum given to the Ministry of Education by NEHUSU, NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and NEHU Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) on Thursday.

“The 48-hour ultimatum expired yesterday and this morning we had a discussion with the different authorities in which we told them to go as per rules to appoint senior most professor as acting VC,” NEHUSU president Sandy Sohtun told reporters.

“Since the senior most professor N Saha he is on leave, we have to approach the second senior most professor of the university for appointment as the acting VC,” Sohtun added.

Meanwhile, there has been no communication from the state government to the agitating organisations in this connection as yet, he said.

They have remained firm on not allowing return of Prof Shukla, who resumed charge as VC virtually earlier this month after going on a long leave, to the campus.
