Tura, Dec 21: In the wake of a call for resignation of Prof Fameline K Marak as the Pro Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Tura Campus, the student bodies of the Campus have strongly come out in her support even as they alleged prolonged administrative negligence and corruption at the highest level.
In a press statement issued by Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) and Garo Students’ Union (GSU) NEHU Tura Campus Cell, the student community termed the appointment of Prof FK Marak as Pro VC as “legal and justified”, noting that it was approved by the NEHU Executive Council in May 2025 under the NEHU Act of 1973.
With the Tura campus currently functioning with just two regular officers and a workforce largely composed of contractual staff, they stated that Prof Marak’s leadership is critical to preventing a renewed administrative breakdown.
“We will not allow the Pro Vice-Chancellor to resign,” the statement read, asserting that her exit would plunge the campus into a “total administrative void” and “directly harm students.”
The Tura Campus had remained without a Pro VC and a recognised student body for nearly four years, they pointed out.
They accused the NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla of bypassing due process, weakening the campus administration, and pushing the institution into a prolonged phase of instability.
The Vice-Chancellor, instead, appointed a “Campus Director” with limited powers, they said adding that the move crippled academic and administrative functioning and dissolved student representation during a period of heightened uncertainty.
The students described the phase as one marked by “unequivocal corruption” and the erosion of democratic accountability. They also reiterated solidarity with the broader NEHU-wide agitation demanding action against the Vice-Chancellor for alleged mismanagement.
The students have urged NEHU authorities and stakeholders to distinguish between what they describe as systemic failures at the top and the stabilising leadership now emerging on the Tura campus.
They stressed that while they remain firmly opposed to the Vice-Chancellor’s alleged misconduct, they will continue to defend the Pro VC’s position to safeguard the campus from further disruption.
