Netflix announces ‘The Royals’ season two; Ishaan Khatter returning sans Bhumi Pednekar

Mumbai, Nov 3: Streaming service Netflix on Tuesday announced that production has begun on the second season of its hit comedy-drama series “The Royals” with actor Ishaan Khatter set to reprise his role.

Actor Bhumi Pednekar, who starred opposite Khatter in the first season, is not coming back for the second chapter, which will be directed by Nitya Mehra and Tanuj Chopra.

Created by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy, the first season was released in May 2025 and made it to Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English TV Shows across 58 countries.

Season one followed the romance between Aviraaj Singh (Khatter), a charming but carefree prince of the financially struggling royal family of Morpur, and Sophia Kanmani Shekhar (Pednekar), a self-made entrepreneur and CEO looking to expand her luxury homestay business.

The two were forced to work together to transform the crumbling royal palace into a luxury bed-and-breakfast, but their contrasting personalities and ambitions led to clashes, family rivalries and an unexpected romance.

For the second season, veteran actor Zeenat Aman as well as Sakshi Tanwar, Vihaan Samat, and Kavya Trehan are also reprising their roles, Netflix said.

“The story will continue on a grander scale, with more kingdoms entering the fold, new alliances, rivalries and romances in the making, proving once again that royal life is anything but orderly,” the streamer added.

Creators Rangita and Ishita said the love from viewers for the first season made their journey with the show all the more special.

“We’re excited to return to this world of larger-than-life characters, complicated relationships and a family that never runs short of surprises. With season two, we’re looking forward to taking the story forward, bringing back the characters audiences have come to love, and turning up the romance, humour and family drama.

“There’s so much more to explore in Morpur, and we can’t wait for audiences to join us for another season of love, laughter and royally entertaining chaos!” they said in a joint statement.

Tanya Bami, Series Head at Netflix India, said “The Royals” season two will go deeper into Morpur while also widening the canvas, with new relationships, rivalries and characters bringing fresh energy to the story.

“Rangita and Ishita Nandy have created a world that can be glamorous one minute and hysterically chaotic the very next, and with Tanuj Chopra and Nitya Mehra directing this season, we’re excited to see that mix of heart, humour and drama evolve to take the next season to an even higher level,” she added.
