New Assembly building to be ready by June 2026: Speaker

Shillong, Nov 5: Construction of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is likely to be completed by June next year, said Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma following a review meeting held in presence of deputy chief minister in-charge Parliamentary Affairs Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday.

Although the initial target for completion was March 2025, vendors have sought a six-month extension to complete the interior works, including the main hall, reception area, and lobby.

The Speaker said monthly review meetings will be held to ensure timely progress of the construction, with the next meeting scheduled for December 8.

He expressed optimism that the Autumn Session of 2026 will be conducted in the new Assembly building, which will feature advanced audio-visual systems, acoustics, and security installations.

The redesigned dome has been engineered to evenly distribute the roof’s weight and has been vetted by IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee, he said.

The project involves several crucial components, and detailed DPRs are being prepared for the second phase, which will include staff quarters and other essential facilities.

The concerned Central Ministries have been approached for necessary approvals.
