New Secretariat likely to meet 2027 deadline: CM

Shillong, May 8: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday informed that the new State Secretariat, which is coming up in New Shillong Township and part of establishing a new administrative city, will likely be completed in mid-2027.

The new administrative city is seen as important aspect in decongesting the Shillong city, which currently houses all the government offices in close clusters next to the Police Bazaar, the commercial hub of Shillong.

Accompanied by officials from the Planning and Urban Affairs Department, the Chief Minister visited the construction site of the new Secretariat at Umsawli and reviewed the pace and quality of the work and expressed satisfaction with its progress. The new Secretariat is being built at an estimated cost of Rs. 1188 crore, the foundation stone of which was laid on January 21, 2025.

“We expect that the project should be completed on time and we (are) expecting that sometime in 2027 mid we should be able to complete this project. So, this is a very, very important project because this not only is the overall administrative city, but it will also lead to a large level of decongestion within the existing Shillong City,” the Chief Minister said after the inspection.

He said that on completion of the project, the site will not only become an administrative city, but will contribute to de-congestion Shillong city to a large extend. “Because once the administration moves out, then a lot of the space will be open, a lot of the traffic will be diverted. And, therefore, we will see a large level of decongestant taking place in Shillong City itself,” he explained.

“This iconic building will lay the foundation for an active administration. Its design has been thoughtfully conceptualized to integrate sustainability and cultural elements within a modern architectural framework,” Sangma said, noting his anticipation for its completion.

He also mentioned that a number of internal roads in the New Shillong Township have been completed and many others road projects are ongoing. The road communication network in the administrative township will connect various iconic projects in the area, and will also elevate the overall connectivity with Shillong.  “We will have a very good connectivity from the existing Shillong city to the new administrative city,” he remarked.

“We have come to see the work, we have reviewed the whole work and we’re very satisfied with the speed of the work and we expect that to the project will be completed,” he concluded.
