Over Rs 100 cr spent to enhance Meghalaya’s green cover

SHILLONG, AUG 29: A total of 99,78,352 saplings have been planted amounting to over Rs 100 crore during the last five years, infomed Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday.

Sangma in a reply to the Assembly said approximately 1.19 lakh hectares has been covered in the state from 2020 till June 2024.

He further added that out of the 99,78,352 saplings, over 73,76,735 have survived and are monitored in a periodical manner.

Responding to a supplementary raised by VPP MLA from Mawryngkneng, Heavingstone Kharpran, the chief minister said 75 per cent is a decent survival rate even though the desired outcome was 100 per cent survival.

Sangma also noted that the success rate rises when the community is involved and that the government is also making an effort to include them in such projects.

“We are also in the process of incentivising such communities to increase the survival rate to 100 per cent” he added.
