Police reinforcement sent to violence-hit Mawkynrew  

Clash over land allotted to Ramakrishna Mission School  

Shillong, Jan 20: The state police have sent reinforcement to curfew-bound Mawkynrew in East Khasi Hills district in order to contain violent protests over allotment of land for construction of a Ramakrishna Mission School in the village.

“We have deployed another platoon of police personnel at the construction site to ensure law and order is maintained,” said East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem.

At least six persons including four woman police personnel were injured during a clash that broke out between police and villagers, who are protesting against the alleged decision of the dorbar shnong to allot plot of land for construction of the school.

“Four of our woman police personnel sustained minor injuries and two members of the public were also injured during the incident,” the SP said, adding, “The situation has been brought under control.”  

Meanwhile, the district administration imposed curfew in the area following eruption of violence.

“…in exercise of the powers conferred upon me under section 163 BNSS do hereby promulgate curfew in the above site at Mawkynrew village with immediate effect till further orders,” deputy commissioner RM Kurbah stated in her order..

The DC said the the order was issued following information about “serious deterioration of law and order in areas under Mawkynrew village with reports of vandalism causing destruction to property and person at Ramakrishna Mission School, Mawkynrew”.

“These activities are likely to continue with every likelihood of causing serious breach of peace and tranquillity and may lead to loss of life and property,” the DC stated.
