Political shake-up in Bodoland: Kampa Borgoyari to Join UPPL with 400 BPF leaders

Guwahati, Feb 7: In a major political development in Bodoland, former Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) deputy chief Kampa Borgoyari, who resigned from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) on February 2, is set to formally join the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on Saturday.

His induction will take place at a function at Thaikajhora playground in Chirang district, marking a significant shift in BTC’s political landscape. Borgoyari’s switch will be accompanied by over 400 BPF leaders, including presidents and secretaries of 11 primary committees, signalling a mass exodus from the party.

The event will be attended by Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief Pramod Boro and senior UPPL leaders. Addressing reporters on Friday, Borgoyari dismissed speculation of external pressure, stating, “This is my free will. BPF lacks positive vision and decision-making.”

He criticized the party for failing to consider a merger with UPPL in the greater interest of Bodoland’s development. “UPPL is working with a positive mindset for BTR’s progress, which is why I have decided to join them,” he added.

Borgoyari’s resignation ended his two-decade-long association with BPF and former BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary. Serving as BPF’s vice president, he stepped down from both his leadership position and primary membership on February 2.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Borgoyari contested from the Kokrajhar (ST) seat but lost to UPPL’s Joyanta Basumatary. Since then, he has maintained a cordial relationship with UPPL’s leadership, making his transition a calculated political move.

Reflecting on his 20-year journey with BPF, Borgoyari expressed gratitude, stating, “I hope the party continues to grow under capable leadership and fulfils the aspirations of the people.” In a social media post, he described his departure as “a deeply personal decision”, calling his time in BPF “an incredible journey filled with memories and valuable experiences.”

While parting ways with BPF, he reaffirmed his commitment to public service, stating, “This resignation does not change my dedication to the people. I will continue working toward meaningful progress.”

Borgoyari’s move to UPPL is expected to reshape Bodoland’s political landscape, particularly as the region gears up for upcoming elections. His defection, along with 400 BPF leaders, marks a major setback for BPF and further strengthens UPPL’s position in BTC politics.
