Pope’s transformative Papacy touched the world: CM

Shillong, Apr 21: Along with the rest of the world, the passing of Pope Francis was widely condoled in the Christian-majority Meghalaya.

Expressing his heartfelt condolences, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said Pope Francis was “a true servant of God whose transformative Papacy touched the world.”

In a letter addressed to Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India, Sangma wrote, “His Holiness Pope Francis was known as ‘The People’s Pope,’ his humility, compassion, and simplicity redefined the role of spiritual leadership in our time, and resonated beyond the walls of the Vatican. He championed environmental stewardship through Laudato Si inspiring global action for our planet.”

He also acknowledged Pope Francis’s deep compassion for marginalised groups, from the poor and refugees to victims of injustice. “The Pope’s advocacy for the poor, refugees, and victims of injustice reflected his unwavering commitment to mercy, dignity, and inclusion,” Sangma remarked.

“His interfaith efforts, like the *Document on Human Fraternity”, and his advocacy for peace in conflict zones built bridges of understanding and unity across religious and cultural divides.,” Sangma wrote.

The chief minister also paid tribute to Pope Francis’s enduring legacy, noting that his message of compassion, joy and justice will continue to inspire future generations.

“On my behalf, and on behalf of the people of Meghalaya, I offer my sincere tribute to Pope Francis for his remarkable leadership and service,” Sangma expressed, adding, “May his soul rest in eternal peace”.
