Screening camp on World Cancer day at Pynursla

Shillong, Feb 6: The critical importance of collaborative efforts among healthcare providers, policymakers, and the community to effectively reduce the burden of cancer in the region was highlighted during a cancer awareness day held at Pynursla Community Health Centre (CHC), East Khasi Hills on Wednesday.

Speaking during the World Cancer Day event, Dr C Iangrai, Joint Director of Health Services (MCH & FW), Health & Family Welfare Department delivered a compelling address to the gathering urging everyone to prioritize regular health screenings. She recommended an annual check-up for high blood pressure and blood sugar levels, as well as a cancer screening every five years. These measures, she stressed, are vital for early detection and prevention, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for all.

Dr Iangrai also highlighted the government’s proactive steps in transforming Sub Health Centres into Health and Wellness Centres. These upgraded facilities are now fully equipped with essential medicines and staffed by qualified healthcare professionals, including NCD nurses and health workers, to ensure comprehensive care for the community, she said.

The event brings together healthcare professionals, government officials, and community members under the theme “United by Unique.” and was organised by the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya in collaboration with Pynursla Community Health Centre (CHC) the event aimed to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment, while fostering a sense of unity in the fight against this global health challenge.  

Meanwhile, Dr Anisha Mawlong, member secretary of the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya, shared valuable insights into the latest advancements in cancer treatment. She emphasized the critical role of early detection and lifestyle modifications in preventing the disease. 

Dr. Mawlong highlighted alarming statistics, noting that East Khasi Hills ranks second among men and eleventh among women for having the highest number of cancer patients in India. She further revealed that out of every 100,000 individuals, approximately 200 are affected by cancer in east Khasi hills district. She identified tobacco consumption as one of the leading contributing factors to the high prevalence of cancer in Meghalaya.

A Lyngkhoi, the Junior Rural Development Officer (JRDO) of the C&RD Development Block Office in Pynursla emphasised the crucial role that local governance plays in supporting healthcare initiatives. The JRDO reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing access to cancer care and awareness programs in rural areas, highlighting the significance of World Cancer Day.

The JRDO encouraged citizens to prioritize their health, stressing the importance of early testing and screening. Additionally, the officer informed the public about the benefits of the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) Card.

This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to improve healthcare services in rural Meghalaya especially in early detection of cancer and better treatment outcome as part of the Meghalaya Cancer Prevention and Early detection mission that the state has initiated. A total of 70 patients were screened for cancer, diabetes and hypertension.
