Seminar on handicrafts schemes and E-commerce

Empowering Ampati artisans

Ampati, Oct 1: A one-day seminar and workshop focusing on the awareness of schemes by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) was conducted at the BADO Multi-Facility Hall in Ampati on Monday. 

The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from 40 artisans who engaged with a variety of sessions led by expert resource persons. 

Organised by the Handicrafts Service Centre from the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) in Shillong, the event aimed to empower local artisans by providing them with essential knowledge and tools to access wider markets in an increasingly digital and globalized economy.

The programme covered crucial topics such as the Development Commissioner’s schemes, E-Commerce strategies, the GeM portal, GST, and various craft-specific issues. These sessions included in-depth discussions on several initiatives under the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts (DC Handicrafts), such as the Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme, Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana (AHVY), and the Mega Cluster Scheme, all designed to enhance skills, provide marketing support, and promote research and development within the handicrafts sector.

The event was graced by Additional Deputy Commissioner, South West Garo Hills, Wilfred Challang R Marak, who shared insights into the importance of handicrafts to the local economy and expressed his support for artisan development. Cherak R Marak, Functional Manager of the District Commerce and Industries Centre, South West Garo Hills, served as the Guest of Honour, delivering an inspiring speech encouraging artisans to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship.

Representatives from PRIME Meghalaya were also present, discussing various facilities and schemes designed to bolster entrepreneurship and artisan development. The Project Officer, NER,  Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) Bhaskar Baruah presented a session detailing the benefits of exporting handicraft products to international markets, equipping artisans with the knowledge necessary for global expansion. 

The “Schemes of DC (Handicraft)” was presented by Rima Sonar, Assistant Director (Handicrafts), HSC Shillong, followed by a session on marketing and GI tagging conducted by Elisha Sangma, Digital Marketing Lead, Living Roots USA LLC. Additionally, the Branch Manager from SBI addressed the attendees, offering insights into the banking facilities and financial support available to artisans for business growth.

The seminar concluded on a high note, with participants expressing optimism about their future prospects. The organisers extended their commitment to continue working closely with the artisans, helping them take their crafts to new heights and reach wider markets.
