Shillong, Oct 25: Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon has sought an investigation into unauthorised parking of trucks along NH-6, especially the 14th Mile–Jorabat stretch, and requested for action to regulate parking for convenience of the commuters.
“I respectfully request your good office to investigate the root causes compelling truckers to park along the highway – such as lack of designated parking facilities, delays in loading/unloading or insufficient enforcement,” Syngkon said a letter to Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) leader also highlighted that the persistent issue has resulted in serious traffic congestion, compromised vehicular flow, and heightened safety risks for both commuters and pedestrians.
Syngkon pointed out that the two-lane carriageway has effectively been reduced to a single lane due to trucks being left on the roadside, causing prolonged traffic delays and creating grave danger, especially under poor visibility or adverse weather conditions.
He requested the deputy commissioner to strictly regulate unauthorised roadside parking, and engage with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to explore the development of a designated truck lay-by or parking area along NH-6 in the district.
The MP emphasized that swift and proactive intervention is necessary to restore smooth traffic flow and enhance public safety along this vital highway, which is a strategic transport corridor for the Northeast region.
