Shillong, July 16: Cabinet minister Kyrmen Shylla has termed drug abuse a global concern and called for a collective effort to fight the drug menace in Meghalaya.
Individuals, families, and communities must come together to support those affected by drug abuse, the minister told reporters on Wednesday while appreciating the efforts of Dorbar Shnong in different localities in preventing drug abuse among the youth.

He also acknowledged the efforts of government departments, including the police and health departments, in tackling the drug menace.
The minister stressed the need for MLAs in introducing sports activities and other initiatives to keep the youth engaged and prevent them from getting involved in drugs.
Meanwhile, he emphasised the importance of open discussion and support for individuals and families affected by drug abuse.
“…if someone is using drugs in my family, I have to share it… later on it will be next to impossible for him to overcome the drugs,” he said, adding, “…we should not be ashamed of our family members….”
Shylla noted that while checkpoints are important in preventing the entry of drugs, they are not the only solution.
Citing the menace in countries like the USA, he said despite having robust tracking systems, they still struggle with drug abuse.
Meanwhile, the minister emphasized the importance of installing CCTV cameras for the safety of tourists and citizens in Meghalaya.

He, however, noted that while it is crucial to have CCTV cameras, the challenge lies in managing and implementing the system effectively.
Shylla appreciated the fact that many big shops and establishments already have CCTV cameras installed. He also highlighted the role of mobile phones in solving cases through recordings.
Shylla suggested that an Integrated Command Control System would be beneficial, especially in areas like Jaintia Hills.
