Shylla welcomes inquiry into MLA scheme

Shillong, Nov 19: UDP legislator from Khliehriat Kyrmen Shylla on Wednesday said there is no opposition to an inquiry if the public feels the funds have not reached the intended beneficiaries.

He was commenting on the Voice of the People Party (VPP)’s demand for an independent probe into the implementation of the MLA Scheme in Meghalaya.

“Whatever is the right of the people has to go to them. But if we feel that it has not been delivered, the government and the public have the right to demand an independent inquiry or (cause) any kind of inquiry – we are most welcome for that,” Shylla, who is also the adviser to the Mining & Geology department, told reporters.

“I would love people to know what I have been doing and that the schemes are reaching them on time. No doubt delay sometimes happens but it is not intentional,” he added.

Asked, Shylla said, “There is nothing to hide. If there is nothing to hide, RTI is the right thing instead of inquiry. It is very easy – file an RTI with the BDO office and you will get everything.”

“Every penny of this money belongs to the people. If somebody doubts me or anyone, the government has the right to search what exactly is going on. So if any doubt, we should not leave anybody.”

Shylla reiterated that the MLA Scheme allocates Rs 2.5 crore per constituency annually and emphasized that the funds must reach the people, not be diverted.

He acknowledged occasional delays but affirmed his commitment to ensure the money is utilized within the five‑year term.
