Skill training for to empower local youths

Shillong, Feb 5: Artisans from diverse groups of the community were provided with hands-on-training through practical demonstration and interactive sessions during a skill training programme at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community College for Skill Development, Wahiajer.

The community college, a constituent of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) organised the training programme on “Handmade Embroidery Making” for the youths of the community from January 29 to February 4. 

The six-day training programme hopes to empower the local youths in the community with essential vocational skills for their economic independence and sustainable livelihood.

Resource persons provided various training, including cutting, stitching and the utilization of different types of trimmings in handmade embroidery making to enhance their craft skills significantly to artisans.

The resource persons inspired the participants to become independent and also encouraged them to value their cultural skills and talents and to remain committed through hard work to achieve their goals in sustaining their livelihood.

Prof. H. Lamin (Retd), Founder Principal in-charge of DDUCC, NEHU graced the valedictory function as the chief guest while Lukas Jat, member of the Wahiajer village was the guest of honour. 

In their speeches, they underscored the significance of craft knitting embroidery as an integral aspect of the country’s rich cultural heritage and also encouraged the youths to keep on working towards their goal. Prof S M Sungoh, Principal in-charge, DDUCC and Dr F R Sumer, Librarian, NEHU also spoke on the occasion while Wolnish Rymbai, Programme Coordinator concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
