Sohra, June 11: The people of Sohra on Tuesday paid tribute to murdered Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi and issued a stern ultimatum to national media houses to tender a public apology within 24 hours for misrepresenting Meghalaya and its people, or face legal consequences.
The candle light vigil, organized by the Hima Sohra, drew thousands of local residents who lit candles, offered prayers, and expressed solidarity with the family of Raja, who was allegedly murdered by his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi and three accomplices during their honeymoon visit to the region on May 23.

Local sentiment, however, turned from grief to indignation, as speakers at the gathering condemned what they described as a “malicious misinformation campaign” by several national TV channels, online commentators, and social media users who portrayed Sohra and Meghalaya as unsafe or crime-prone.
“We demand an unconditional apology from all national media houses and individuals on social media who spread false and defamatory content about Sohra and its people. If no apology is issued within the next 24 hours, we will not hesitate to file FIRs and pursue legal action,” a spokesperson from Hima Sohra announced during the vigil.
Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem, who attended the vigil, reiterated the community’s pain and outrage. “This is a tragedy that has deeply shaken us all. Raja was a guest in our land. The people of Sohra welcomed him with open hearts, and what happened to him is not a reflection of this place. It is shameful that national media chose to paint Sohra as a dangerous region instead of reporting responsibly,” he said.

The four accused, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, are currently in police custody and being presented before the Shillong court. Meghalaya Police confirmed that the investigation is advancing and assured that justice will be delivered.
Meanwhile, civil society leaders said that Meghalaya has a long-standing tradition of peace and hospitality, which should not be overshadowed by an isolated crime orchestrated by outsiders.

The message from Sohra was clear — justice for Raja, respect for Meghalaya, and accountability for those who distort the truth.
Former CEM of KHADC Titosstarwell Chyne also participated in the candle light vigil.
