According to Dr. Sanjay O’Neil Shaw, Deputy Director General of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now extends through key regions, including Mumbai, Pune, Kalaburagi, Mahbubnagar, Kavali, Agartala, Golpara, and up to 28.5°N/89°E.

“The monsoon has advanced into most parts of the Northeast as expected. Conditions remain favourable for its further advance into the remaining Northeastern states, as well as Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, within the next 72 hours,” Dr. Shaw stated.

The updated NLM now runs along 17.0°N/55°E, 17.5°N/60°E, 18°N/65°E, 18.5°N/70°E, Mumbai, Pune, Sholapur, Kalaburagi, Mahbubnagar, Kavali, 16.5°N/83°E, 19°N/86°E, 21°N/89°E, Agartala, Golpara, 28.5°N/89°E.

With this advancement, large parts of the Northeast are expected to witness increased rainfall activity, bringing much-needed relief from pre-monsoon heat and dryness. The monsoon’s timely arrival also bodes well for agriculture, especially the sowing of kharif crops, in the region.

The IMD continues to monitor the monsoon’s progression closely and will issue further updates as it advances toward Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and additional parts of Assam and Meghalaya.
