State table tennis championship under way at Tura

Tura, Oct 15: The 42nd State Meghalaya Table Tennis Championship is under way with the participation of over 100 players at Tura, which is hosting the state-level event for the 5th time.

Players from Shillong, Nongstoin, Jowai, Baghmara, and Tura are competing in various categories of the championship organised by Tura Table Tennis Association under the aegis of Meghalaya Table Tennis Association.

“We are preparing to host the National Games, and this championship will help us identify probable athletes for national-level competitions. The best performers will be shortlisted for the table tennis event in the upcoming National Games,” said Sengre Sangma, secretary of Tura Table Tennis Association during inauguration of the five-day championship on October 14.

Top-performing Under-19 players from the championship will be selected to represent Meghalaya at National School Games to be held in Jammu and Kashmir by November-end.

Earlier, the opening day of the event saw cancellation of the Veterans category due to a lack of participants.

The organisers and players also observed a minute’s silence in memory of Chinovn G Momin, a player who tragically passed away while participating in a tournament at Baghmara earlier this year.
