Shillong, Oct 12: Student unions of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have urged Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar to appoint a regular Vice-Chancellor who understands the university and the needs of NE students.
In a joint letter, NEHUSU and KSU-NEHU Unit said NEHU has the potential to improve its academic performance but needs a stable leadership to do so.
The unions said the next Vice-Chancellor should have a strong academic background, administrative experience and a clear understanding of NEHU and the Northeastern region.
They pointed to NIRF rankings: 15th in 2016 to 151-200 in 2025, calling it a significant development that needs reflection and hoped that the appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor would help improve the university’s functioning and address students’ concerns.
The union said the university must also ensure that it has enough classrooms, teachers and other facilities before fully implementing new courses under the National Education Policy, including the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme, Integrated Teacher Education Programme and one-year postgraduate course.
