Suspected militant killed in ‘encounter’ in Manipur’s Churachandpur

Imphal, Jun 17: A suspected militant was killed in an alleged encounter with security forces in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, police said on Wednesday.

The encounter took place between “militant groups” and a joint team of the Assam Rifles and the Army at Henglep sub-division of the district on Tuesday, they said.

“During the encounter, one suspected militant was killed. An AK-47 rifle, along with magazines, ammunition, explosives, and other incriminating items, was recovered from the spot,” a police statement said.

“A case has been registered in this connection, and further investigation is in progress,” it said.

Meanwhile, in a statement, ruling BJP MLA from Henglep Letzamang Haokip condemned the incident, claiming that “a civilian has lost his life at the hands of those entrusted with his protection”.

He also demanded a judicial and independent inquiry into the incident. (PTI)
