Teen gang-raped on her way home from tuition, widespread protests erupt

Total shut down in Central Assam town; one arrested, 2 detained

Guwahati Aug 23: In yet another horrific incident, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men at Dhing PHE office of Central Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday evening, triggering a massive protest among locals, who called for an indefinite shutdown of shops and business establishments.

The incident came amid the ongoing protests and outrage in the wake of the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The incident occurred when the girl returned home from her tuition in the evening. She was lying on the road without any clothing for around an hour before being rescued.

The girl, a class X student, was found in a semi-conscious state lying near a pond with her cycle beside her. She was spotted by some locals who immediately reported the police. The girl was rescued and was rushed to Dhing FRU for medical assistance. The condition of the victim girl is said to be not well.

According to the local residents who rescued her, the minor said that she was gangraped by three men.

Thousands of people from various parts of the state gathered at Dhing on Friday to register their protest against the gangrape incident.

They also demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the incident and award them exemplary punishment.

The AASU and other civil society organizations called for a total bandh in Dhing town on Friday.

The town is marred by huge protests by women and youths demanding justice and the arrest of all the culprits involved in the crime.

Thousand of women have blocked roads seeking the government to be proactive and swift action from the police.

The police have detained one person based on suspicion.

The women protestors sought one of the culprits arrested by Nagaon police under their custody from police lockup.

Due to the bandh call, all commercial establishments, educational institutions, shops and government offices in Dhing remained closed for the day.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, leader of Beer Lasit Sena, Shringkhal Chaliha also visited Dhing and condemned the incident, seeking justice for the victim girl.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika, and DGP GP Singh rushed to Dhing and took stock of the situation.

Minister Hazarika and DGP Singh also visited the residence of the victim girl and assured the parents that all the culprits would be arrested soon.

DGP Singh also assured the parents of the victim girl that the police would leave no stone unturned to initiate all possible measures to ensure exemplary punishment under laws to those culprits involved in the incident.

The police arrested one Tafajjul Islam and also picked up two other youths on Thursday night. The arrested Tafajjul was interrogated by a team of police at Dhing police station.
