Tura, March 1: Sitting All India Trinamool Congress MDC from Samanda constituency in East Garo Hills, Lahitson M Sangma today passed away in Delhi after battling cancer.
The two term MDC from Samanda was undergoing treatment in a hospital in New Delhi when he passed away on Sunday evening. His body is being brought back to his home in Baiza, near Williamnagar, for the last rites on Monday.
Late Lahitson M Sangma won his first MDC election on a Congress ticket in 2009, but lost the next election. However, he made a strong comeback a second time in 2021, again on a Congress ticket. However, Late Lahitson and the entire Congress group of MDCs switched over to the All India Trinamool Congress when former Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma defected, leaving the Congress dry in its once powerful bastion of the Garo Hills.
Due to his poor health, the Trinamool Congress had announced a new candidate for Samanda constituency for the ensuing GHADC elections, this year.
