Truckers’ strike: VPP demands of release of MCTODA leaders

Shillong, Nov 7: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has alleged “excesses and brutality” on protesters during the strike called Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners’ and Drivers’ Association (MCTODA) against cement companies.

“The action of the Government deserves strongest condemnation from all quarters and it has no place in a democratic society,” VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said on Friday.

The VPP alleged that the government action has brought shock to the residents of Mawryngkneng particularly women and children.

Accusing the government of attempting to strike fear among the people instead of ensuring peace and tranquility, the state government instead treated the cement companies as VIPs.

The VPP leader cited “previous incidents of brutality”, including the Thangskai incident in East Jaintia Hills district and the use of teargases on peaceful protesters.

Appreciating residents of Mawryngkneng for staging protest, he demanded for immediate release of arrested MCTODA leaders, dropping all charges against them.
