Tura, May 6: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, during a Monday inspection, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing construction of Tura Medical College, reaffirming the government’s commitment to operationalizing the institution by the next academic session.

During his visit, the chief minister announced that nearly 80 percent of the civil work has been completed, with the majority of the college’s infrastructure expected to be ready within this calendar year.

“We are optimistic that a major portion of the infrastructure will be ready within this calendar year,” said Conrad Sangma, adding that the government is closely monitoring construction to meet deadlines.

Additionally, the chief minister informed that discussions are underway to explore partnerships for the management and operation of the college, while ownership will remain with the state government.

Sangma also assured that the medical college will prioritize students from Meghalaya, with a majority of seats reserved for state candidates.

“Tura Medical College will primarily serve the students of Meghalaya, ensuring better access to medical education for our youth,” he said.

Beyond education, the college is expected to strengthen healthcare facilities in the Garo Hills region, said the chief minister, highlighting the government’s broader efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility, including investments in modernizing hospitals, improving infrastructure in remote areas, and recruiting qualified professionals. “Our vision is a robust, inclusive healthcare system that delivers quality services to every citizen, no matter where they are,” he said.
