Tura water supply project to benefit 2.7 lakh by 2055
Shillong, Mar 7: The drinking water scenario in Shillong and Tura could undergo a sea change in the coming years with two major water supply projects approved by the state government in less than a year.
Informing this in the floor of the House, PHE minister Marcuise N Marak on Friday laid down the various facts and figures related to the two projects – Greater Tura and New Shillong.
The Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme is designed to meet the water demand of 30 million litres per day (MLD) by 2055 and New Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase-I) 70 MLD by 2057, he said.
The Tura project was accorded administrative approval on January 31, 2025 for an amount of Rs 398.48 crore.
The source of water for the pumping scheme is Ganol river, which has a dry weather discharge of 195.42 MLD based on flow measurement.
“The scheme is designed to cater to the ultimate population of 2,69,763 and the ultimate water demand of 30 MLD in 2055,” the minister said.
It will benefit the entire population of Tura town, including all the institutions being set up in and around Tura.
Meanwhile, the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase-I) was accorded administrative approval on March 15, 2024 at Rs 538.44 crore under the State Plan.
Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) contract for the project was awarded to BAC Infratech on June 26, 2024. Stipulated time for completion of the project is two years.
For the New Shillong project, the source of water is Umkhen river, which has a dry weather discharge of 123.16 MLD.
The project is designed to cater potable water supply to New Shillong Township and adjoining 32 villages.
“It shall supply water to an ultimate population of 4.14 lakh with the ultimate supply of water70 MLD by 2057, that is after 30 years,” Marak said.
