Shillong, July 15: Power minster AT Mondal has assured of looking into the issue of “overbilling” by smart meters after meeting a delegation of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Tuesday.
The KSU delegation raised concern over “soaring electricity bills” in BSUP housing complex at Nongmensong, Shillong.

Meanwhile, the minister proposed to investigate the issue by installing two meters side by side to compare the difference between the bills.
Mentioning that the smart meters are installed following Central government directive, which is followed by all the states, he said, “The question of overbilling will be looked into and, if needed, we can have two meters side by side to see the exact difference.”
Smart meters are being installed across the country to address issues such as wrong billing, suppressed billing, and delayed billing, he said.

Meanwhile, he assured that the issue will be discussed with the chairman & managing director (CMD) of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).
“By next week, we will try to resolve the issue,” he said.
Further, the minister said smart meters will be installed in phases across the state, covering all consumer connections.
It is not only Nongmensong, but smart meters will be installed wherever there is a consumer connection, he said.
“We cannot cover 6 lakh consumers in a day or two. It will be covered in a phases,” he added.
