Shillong, Nov 5: Deputy Chief Minister and NPP state president Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday refuted allegations made by the Congress that HIV/AIDS and drug menace are increasing under the NPP-led MDA government are just political allegations.
He announced that the government is gearing up to tackle HIV/AIDS with renewed vigor, launching a mission-mode initiative aimed at eradicating the disease.
“We’ve convened a meeting to combat HIV/AIDS, a silent killer. The department is working to present the issue to the cabinet. We’re tackling the drug menace in mission mode and want to combat HIV/AIDS similarly, setting a timeline to eradicate or contain the disease. Allegations that HIV/AIDS and drug menace are increasing under the NPP government are just political allegations,” Tynsong said while slamming AICC in-charge Meghalaya Dr A Chellakumar for alleging that the rise in HIV cases is due the NPP-led government’s alleged nexus with the drug mafia.
The deputy chief minister also described the issue of drug menace and HIV/AIDS as complex.
“We’re not saying we produce them in Meghalaya; it comes from all over. We’re worried about it in India, just like former US President Donald Trump stated that America isn’t producing it. Drugs are trafficked from other countries,” he stated.
