Shillong, June 30: The United Democratic Party (UDP), an alliance partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government, has authorised the party president Metbah Lyngdoh to take a call on the new general secretary.
The key post fell vacant following resignation of former UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh from the party.
“In our last meeting, we have given authority to the president to take a call and fill up this vacancy as early as possible,” UDP leader and cabinet minister Kyrmen Shylla told reporters on Monday.
The UDP president will convene a meeting to take a final call on the issue once he is back in station, Shylla said.
Meanwhile, he expressed concern over Mawthoh’s sudden exit from the party and appreciated his contributions to the party’s growth over the years.
Asked if only elected representatives can take over as UDP general secretary, Shylla said, “There is no such thing in our constitution as anybody can take over as new general secretary.”
On his possibility of becoming the general secretary, Shylla said, “The party will decide. We are here to serve. It doesn’t matter whether I am GS or not. Whatever position we hold, we will work for the party.”
He said he believes good things will happen in the coming days and expressed commitment to work hard.
