Shillong, Mar 20: An “Astronomical Outreach for Night Sky-Gazing” programme was conducted at St Edmund’s College, Shillong by the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on Wednesday night.
Over 150 students participated in the event held with the objective of inspiring scientific curiosity and promoting hands-on learning in astronomy among students, stated a press release.

Dr Nitu Borgohain, assistant professor of Physics at USTM, delivered a talk on “Sky is not the limit” at the programme, which was also addressed by St Edmund’s principal Br Sunil Britto and vice-principal (Academics) Dr KP Pallavi Malhan.
In a hands-on activity “Solar Diameter Determination”, students took part in measuring the Sun’s diameter using simple yet effective techniques.
Student members of Polaris Astronomy Club of USTM guided by Devashree Borgohain, assistant professor of Physics, helped the participants understand different aspects of handling telescopes and gazing at the night sky. The activities were performed in collaboration with the Astronomy Club of St. Edmund’s College, stated the release.
