Shillong, July 28: Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar has been appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya, following major gubernatorial appointments announced late on July 27.
He was elected as member of Karnataka Legislative assembly in 1994. In 1998, he was elected as Lok Sabha member from Mysore Lok Sabha constituency. He was re-elected to the Mysore Lok Sabha constituency in 2004.
Vijayashankar served as a cabinet minister in the government of Karnataka, holding the portfolios of the forest department and small scale industries. He unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the Hassan constituency as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, running against former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda.
He was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from June 15, 2010, until the end of his tenure in January 2016.
Vijayashankar resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party and joined the Indian National Congress in October 2017. He rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party in November 2019.
