VPP a directionless party: NPP

Shillong, Feb 17: The National People’s Party (NPP) has challenged the Voice of the People Party (VPP) to provide evidence of the allegations that the latter had been levelling against the NPP-led government ahead of the autonomous district council (ADC) elections.

“The VPP and its so-called leaders have been alleging that the NPP-led government is corrupt but these are totally baseless allegations as they have failed to provide evidence to substantiate their claims,” said NPP leader Auspicious Lyngdoh Mawphlang while addressing an election campaign meeting at Pynursla on Monday.

He was campaigning for two NPP candidates – Grace Mary Kharpuri from Nongshken and Rahboklang Tynsong from Langkyrdem-Laitkroh under Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Wondering as to why the VPP had not filed any FIR or PIL against any department or minister in MDA governments during current and previous terms, the NPP leader from Mawphlang constituency said, “This is because they don’t have any evidence to prove their allegations against the government, which we can conclude that they are simply making baseless allegations.”

Reminding that the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) had merged with the NPP based on the good works of the present government, Lyngdoh, a former PDF leader, said, “The VPP also alleged that NPP is not for the jaitbynriew but I urge you to judge the good works of the party ever since the time it took over the government in 2018.”

This is the first government which has taken the bold decision to resolve the age-old boundary dispute with Assam, he said.

“6 of 12 areas of difference have been resolved and an agreement was signed between Meghalaya and Assam in presence of Union home minister in Delhi on March 29, 2022. Six remaining areas of difference will soon be resolved and Meghalaya will get its own boundary,” he said.

On the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he pointed out the NPP stood for the jaitbynriew and led a delegation to the Centre seeking exemption for Meghalaya from the Act.

Addressing the meeting, Egenstar Kurkalang said Pynursla has witnessed huge development in the past seven years and that it cannot be compared with any previous government.

“Therefore, I urge the people not to listen to any other party, which are good at giving lip service only.”

Terming VPP as an anti-development party, Kurkalang said, “Despite claiming of having professors and experts as its members, sadly not a single suggestion of this party has reached the table of the government.”

“They (VPP MLAs) don’t want to bring development, and resort to misinformation and false claims. This reflects that it is a direction less party,” he said.
