Guwahati, May 6: In a significant political development, several leaders from the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and AGP joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Assam Pradesh BJP office in Basistha on Monday, reflecting growing support for the party’s development-centric agenda.

Among the prominent names who switched sides were Pranjal Kalita, General Secretary of Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti; Masuma Begum, General Secretary of AAP’s women’s wing and a councillor of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation; Kalpana Das, AGP councillor from Ward No.10; and Anjali Brahma, General Secretary of the Scheduled Tribes Cell of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.

The joining ceremony took place in the presence of Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, organisational general secretary Rabindra Raju, and Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania. Several other grassroots leaders and workers from Congress and AAP also embraced BJP membership.

Welcoming the new entrants, Dilip Saikia said every committed worker finds space and recognition within the BJP structure. “It’s the contribution of dedicated karyakartas and the trust of the people that have made BJP the world’s largest political party,” said Saikia, who is also an MP from Darrang-Udalguri.

Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah reiterated the party’s philosophy of “Nation First, Party Second, Self Third”, and added that the induction of the AAP councillor renders the Guwahati Municipal Corporation opposition-free. He urged the new members to uphold the party’s values and work with sincerity.

Assam BJP vice-president Ashok Bhattarai also welcomed the new members, noting that many from opposition ranks are now turning to BJP, driven by the progress achieved under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership.

The BJP described the event as part of a broader trend — a reflection of public confidence in its governance model and vision for a developed Assam.
