16 deaths, 581 houses damaged in natural disasters in Mizoram last year: Minister

Aizawl, Mar 12: Mizoram has recorded 16 deaths and significant property destruction due to natural calamities over the past year, State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma informed the Assembly on Thursday.

In a written reply to a query from opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator K Laldawngliana, the minister said that the state government has released ex-gratia payments of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the 16 deceased people.

Lalnilawma also said that 581 houses were destroyed by landslides, rain, cyclone and other calamities during the same period.

He said that the affected families were given compensation ranging from Rs 1.3 lakh to Rs 4,000, depending on the category of the house and severity of damage. (PTI)
