56.71% voter turnout in 2nd phase of panchayat poll in Assam

Guwahati, May 7: 56.71 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 3.30 pm during the second phase of the panchayat election in the state conducted by the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) on Wednesday.

A senior official of Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) said the final tally of the voter turnout will go up and it can be ascertained late at night. Because polling booths in many interior places are yet to report their voter turnout.

The second phase of voting was conducted in 13 districts- Nalbari, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon and Darrang districts.

The highest voter turnout was recorded in Bongaigaon with 62.72% followed by 60.51% in Morigaon and 60.22% in Barpeta.

The lowest voter turnout was noticed in Kamrup district with 51.33 per cent.

The voter turnout in other districts is- 59.45% in Nalbari, 58% in South Salmara-Mankachar, 57% in Bajali, 57.65% in Hojai, 56.84% in Kamrup Metro, 56.22% in Goalpara, 53.25% in Darrang, 52.38% in Dhubri and 51.7% voter turnout in Nagaon district.

The first phase of the Panchayat elections held on May 2 recorded a voter turnout of 70.19%.

Polling was held across 14 districts: Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi.

Majuli saw the highest turnout at 80.02%, followed by Dhemaji at 77.14% and Hailakandi at 73.5%. The lowest turnout was recorded in Sonitpur at 61%.
