UDP’s Sohra MDC only one to take oath in Khasi in KHADC
Shillong, Feb 28: The newly elected members of district council (MDCs) in Khasi and Jaintia Hills were administered the oath of office on Thursday.
All 29 members of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) were administered the oath by East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner RM Kurbah at the Council’s hall here.
Former KHADC chief United Democratic Party (UDP) MDC from Sohra Titosstarwell Chyne took the oath in Khasi while all other MDCs chose English for taking the oath.
Among them there are three MLAs, who are also first-time MDCs – UDP’s Synshar Roy Kupar Lyngdoh from Nongspung-Sohiong and Pius Marwein from Langrin, NPP’s Sosthenes Sohtun from Jirang.
There are four new women MDCs in KHADC, including two from the single-largest Voice of the People Party (VPP) – Deiti Majaw from Laitumkhrah-Malki and Aibandaplin L Nonglait from Mylliem. The other two are from NPP – Grace Mary Kharpuri from Nongshken and Rona Khymdeit from Nongpoh.
All the 17 VPP winners are first-time MDCs and they are all set to form the executive committee (EC). The NPP had a poor show in KHADC by winning only four seats while its ally UDP managed five.
Meanwhile, West Jaintia Hills DC administered the oath to the 29 members of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
JHADC chief Thombor Shiwat along with four former CEMs – Hambertus Nongtdu, Madonbai Rymbai, Andrew Shullai and Moonlight Pariat – also took the oath.
In JHADC, the NPP has 14 MDCs, 8 VPP, 3 UDP, 3 Congress and 1 Independent. However, the NPP has roped in other MDCs and managed to scale up its number to 18 and all set to retain port in the council.
