Shillong, July 10: A new building for Kambakpara Government Lower Primary School in South West Garo Hills was inaugurated on Friday, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the village and giving the 68-year-old institution improved infrastructure.
The building was inaugurated by Mahendraganj legislator and Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya on Excise, Sanjay A Sangma, in the presence of officials, teachers, students, village elders and residents.
Established in 1957 as a venture school, the institution has served generations of children from Kambakpara and nearby areas.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma said the state government was undertaking the construction of nearly 2,000 new school and college buildings across Meghalaya this year to improve access to quality education.

He also referred to other development projects planned for Mahendraganj constituency, including indoor and mini stadiums in different areas to promote sports and youth development.
Village leader Rev IA Sangma traced the history of the school and described the new building as the fulfilment of a long-cherished aspiration of the community.
“The new school building will provide a better learning environment for future generations,” he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner and Project Director, DRDA, Ampati, Raymond Zachary D Shira, said quality infrastructure was essential for creating a conducive learning environment.
In-charge Sub-Divisional School Education Officer, Ampati, Emphul Ch Marak, said modern school buildings could improve teaching and learning while encouraging students to pursue education with greater confidence.
The programme was chaired by Pastor Augustha R Marak. Head Teacher Salmendro A Sangma delivered the vote of thanks and acknowledged the efforts of the government, local leaders and villagers in completing the project.
