Jowai, Jan 25: In a hard-fought match, the boys from Ri Bhoi successfully defended their Gold Medal in the football final (Men’s category) of the 6th Meghalaya Games 2025, held at Wahijer Sports Stadium, Jowai.
Ri Bhoi, the reigning champions from the 5th Meghalaya Games held in Tura, faced West Khasi Hills in this year’s final. The match was decided by a single goal scored by Newbirthson Sangkli in the 8th minute of the first half.
In the Women’s category, East Khasi Hills emerged victorious, defeating Ri Bhoi 1-0. The winning goal was scored by Iaraprang Nongrum in the dying minutes of the first half.
In the Bronze Medal match (Men’s), West Jaiñtia Hills dominated South West Khasi Hills with a stunning 7-2 victory. Meanwhile, in the Women’s Bronze Medal match, South West Khasi Hills edged past West Jaiñtia Hills with a narrow 1-0 win.
It is worth noting that all players in both the Men’s and Women’s categories were under the age of 17.
Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Shakliar K Warjri met all the players and the coaches from the six winning teams and inspired the young football players across different districts. He also handed over the Best player award to Sanfida Nongrum and Defender Sylliang, representing EKH and Ri-Bhoi Districts, respectively
