Shillong, Dec 14: In a strong measure to uphold environment norms, seven unauthorised coke plants in East Jaintia Hills have been demolished by the district administration following a court order.
A joint team comprising district officials, police and Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) carried out the demolition drive on the seven of 11 existing unauthorised coke plants in the district. On inspection, the team found the other four coke plants already demolished by their respective owners.
This was informed by East Jaintia Hills deputy commissioner Shivansh Awasthi in a video statement issued on Sunday.
A total of 16 coke plants were identified as unauthorised, with 5 previously demolished.
Notices were issued to the remaining 11 plants in October 2025, seeking compliance with necessary permissions for regularisation.
“As no response was received, the joint team proceeded with the demolition drive on December 13, 2025,” Awasthi said.
The 16 coke plants have been set up without obtaining the necessary authorisations as per the norms and criteria as laid down by the government notification.
After Saturday’s demolition, all 11 unauthorised coke plants are not in operation now, confirmed the Deputy Commissioner.
