NEIGRIHMS holds national emergency life support workshop

Shillong, March 24: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) has trained a first batch of paramedics and doctors as instructors in National Emergency Life Support (NELS), aiming to raise emergency‑care standards across Meghalaya and the wider Northeast.

The three‑day Training of Trainers workshop ran from 18 to 20 March 2026 in collaboration with the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi.

Twenty‑seven participants — doctors and paramedics from NEIGRIHMS, Shillong Medical College and civil hospitals in Shillong, Jowai, Nongpoh and Nongstoin — completed simulation‑based modules on trauma, cardiac and respiratory crises.

Director Prof Nalin Mehta, who patronised the program, said the partnership with JPNATC was essential for “building a strong and skilled emergency care workforce in the North‑East region.”

He added that the institute plans “many such events regularly to build capacity in the entire region.”

The curriculum focused on standardised response protocols to cut decision‑making time in critical moments.

Participants practiced airway management, haemorrhage control and resuscitation scenarios using high‑fidelity mannequins, then developed lesson plans to replicate the training at their home institutions.

“We are preparing them to function as trainers,” an organiser explained. “Each of these 27 professionals can now cascade the skills to colleagues, creating a multiplier effect for emergency preparedness.”
