Amend list of Scheduled Tribes in state: VPP

Govt panel to table report on proposal in 3 months: Paul Lyngdoh

Shillong, Aug 30: The Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) on Thursday sought Constitutional amendment in order to make necessary changes in the list of Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities residing in the state.

Moving a resolution in the state assembly, VPP legislator Adelbert Nongrum sought exclusions and substitutions in the list by amending the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 while considering the actual demographic pattern of the state.

Replying to the motion, social welfare minister Paul Lyngdoh assured that the government would constitute a committee to study the proposal and a report would be submitted in this regard within three months.

“We will engage with the stakeholders and obtain their views before finalising the report. And thereafter it will be forwarded to the Registrar General of India and we will duly follow up the matter as per prescribed procedure,” Lyngdoh assured.

Meghalaya currently has 17 notified tribes as Scheduled Tribe in Part XI of the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 (Part III – Rules and Orders under the Constitution).

In 1999, the government approved modalities for deciding claims for inclusion or exclusion from the lists of Scheduled Tribes.
