Centre likely to propose amendment to 6th Schedule

Shillong, Sept 23:  The Centre is likely to table the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in the Parliament in December.

This was informed by the Convener of the 10 autonomous district councils (ADCs) from the North East and KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem after a meeting held with the Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) AK Mishra in Delhi on Saturday.

“After the meeting, we can understand clearly that the government of India will table the 125th constitutional amendment which includes the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India before the parliament in December this year,” Syiem said on Sunday.

“We thank the MHA for taking the views of all ten ADCs,” he said while adding, “We have made it clear that we will not compromise with our demands especially with regards to the customs, traditions and customary practices. We want to ensure the amendment should not dilute the purpose of the district council.”

“The adviser has assured that the government will try to address all  the issues,” he further added.
