Resist cow yatra: HNLC’s call to Hindus

Shillong, Sept 30: Amid the government prohibition on a scheduled ‘cow yatra’ on October 2 in Shillong apprehending law and order situation due to objections raised from several quarters, the banned HNLC on Sunday called upon all Hindus in Meghalaya to resist the “cow yatra” in the state.
Objecting to any such rally planned by a Hindu rights organisation, the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) said, “Our community will not tolerate interference in our cultural dietary choices.”

“The objections faced by the cow protection group in holding the rally in North East region signifies heightened tension within the community,” said HNLC general secretary cum publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw in a statement. Apprehending Meghalaya too facing cow vigilantism some day as seen in states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the HNLC underlined the urgency of “promptly addressing this issue”.

Meanwhile, following strong reactions to the proposed cow yatra by many organisations in the state, the East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi district authorities have already prohibited holding of any such rally in the districts. The Central Puja Committee (CPC), the most prominent organisation representing Hindus in the
state, have also made it clear that they would not lend any support to the proposed rally.

Airport Authority of India too denied permission to scheduled landing of a chartered flight of Jagadguru Shankaracharya, who was supposed to lead the cow yatra in Shillong. Meanwhile, the guru was forced to return from Itanagar due to protests against his proposed cow yatra in the capital of Arunachal Pradesh.
