Women and children hardest hit by nature’s fury

Tura, Oct 6: In any unrest, war or natural calamity, women and children have always been the most vulnerable targets and victims.

This week’s floods disaster in Garo Hills was no different.

As many as 5 women lost their lives in three separate incidents of landslides that occured on Friday morning.

Children and teens also became another number in the casualty list from nature’s fury.

An infant, Dimse R Marak, who hadn’t seen her second year of life, a little girl of 8 years, Silbera R Marak, and 18 years old Sanira M Marak had their lives cut short in landslides that occured at Hatisia Songmong and Karonggre village, respectively.

From the boys side, Miando P Marak was just 5 years old when a landslide snuffed out his precious life at Sorokpara. Another boy, Wean Chigado R Marak.  Who just turned 13 and was on his way home with his dad remains missing, after being swept away by flood waters of the Bugai river.

Garo Hills hasn’t witnessed a tragedy of such proportions in recent times.
