Anti-drug march in Shillong on Nov 8

Shillong, Oct 19:The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) will take out a procession to the main secretariat on November 8 in protest against the state government’s “failure to implement its seven-point charter of demands” to tackle drug menace in the state.

The HYC also appealed to the public to come out in large numbers to join hands with the organisation’s fight on the issue.

Ahead of the protest march, the HYC would hold public meetings starting 25 October at Umsning, 28 October at Nongstoin, 29 October at Nongpoh, 30 October at Iawmusiang Jowai, 31 October at Mawkyrwat market, 1 November at Khliehriat, 2 November at Mairang and pockets meeting at Mawlai, Upper Shillong, Mawprem, Rynjah and Mawryngkneng.

The HYC’s seven-point charter of demands include Govt treatment and rehab facility, free detoxification OSTs in vulnerable districts, fast track courts to deal with NDPS cases, office of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Shillong among others.

Claiming that the HYC’s demands were already included in Drug Reduction and Action Mission (DREAM) announced by the state government in 2023, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said, “The DREAM project remains only a dream for the state government.”

He said it’s not only the HYC’s fight against drugs but of all concerned citizens of the state.

“Therefore, the HYC will seek the support of the people in the fight to eradicate drugs from the state especially from Shillong,” he added.
