Shillong, Oct 31: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday petitioned the district administration of East Khasi Hills to impose a ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali celebrations.
In a letter to Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, KSU environment secretary Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew pointed out the harmful effect firecrackers have on the environment and public health while maintaining that general safety ‘has become increasingly concerning’.
“…I am hopeful that you will take necessary steps to safeguard the well being of our district and promote a healthier Diwali for all,” he said.
Asking for a temporary ban on firecrackers, the KSU leader said excessive use of firecrackers during Diwali leads to substantial rise in air pollution levels, making it difficult for residents, especially those with respiratory issues.
“ Additionally, the noise pollution from firecrackers affects those with sensitivity to loud sounds, noises and can cause distress among animals and birds including pets,” he said.
On the contrary, he said, many eco-conscious residents and local community groups support alternatives such as diyas, lamps, and cultural activities that uphold the spirit of the festival without causing any environmental harm or damage
Urging Kurbah to take all these into account, the pressure group said the ban could lead to a vital step towards a healthier, safer and more sustainable Diwali celebration.
