Garo literary body thanks PM Modi, CM Sarma for classical language status to Assamese

Guwahati, Nov 6: The Garo Sahitya Sabha (GSS) expressed its gratitude on Wednesday to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister for the recognition of Assamese as a classical language.

On October 4, the Union Cabinet recognized Assamese language as one of the six classical languages of the country.

In a statement, GSS general secretary John Carry Sangma highlighted the Garo community’s cultural heritage, noting that the Garos belong to the Mongolian ethnic group and are primarily Garo language speakers, with Garo being used as a medium of instruction up to Class VIII.

Sangma also appealed for further support, requesting that the Garo language be promoted under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

“We hope that the Garo language medium would be extended up to the Higher Secondary level, emphasizing the need to uplift Garo-medium education beyond the current level,” Sangma added.
