USTM hosts symposium on Physics 

Prof G D Baruah, esteemed scholar and the last known scholar of Nobel Laureate Sir C V Raman honored

Shillong, Nov 14: In a first for the North East, the XI IAPT National Student Symposium on Physics (NSSP-2024) where young physicists and academic luminaries gather from across the nation was held at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya on Tuesday.

The symposium, which will continue till Thursday, aimed at fostering scientific discussion and honoring revered figures in physics, the symposium commenced with a series of ceremonial and heartfelt events. 

The traditional lighting of the lamp marked the inauguration of the event where a special mourning prayer was conducted to honor the memory of Prof G D Baruah, esteemed scholar and the last known scholar of Nobel Laureate Sir C V Raman and a celebration of his contributions to the field of physics and his role as a mentor to the next generation of scientists.

Prof B L Ahuja, Vice Chancellor of Bodoland University attended as the chief guest and inspired the attendees with his words on the evolving landscape of physics and the importance of interdisciplinary studies in addressing global challenges while Prof P K Ahluwalia, president of IAPT, spoke about IAPT’s role in creating forums like NSSP to support budding physicists and also underscored the value of interdisciplinary research such as Physics with Computer Science, on which the Physics Nobel Prize 2024 was based on. 

While highlighting USTM’s commitment to academic excellence, Prof G D Sharma, VC of USTM also addressed the university’s unwavering spirit of scientific inquiry and research in the field of Physics. Dr B K Das, Pro-Vice Chancellor of USTM, provided further motivation in his address, encouraging students to pursue physics with dedication and curiosity. 

Initially, Dr. Ranjita Deka, Coordinator of NSSP-2024 and Vice-President of IAPT East Zone, delivered the welcome address. The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Nitu Borgohain, Co-coordinator of NSSP-2024 and Head of the Department of Physics at USTM, who expressed gratitude to all attendees, organisers, and contributors, affirming the commitment to make NSSP-2024 a memorable and impactful event for all involved. NSSP-2024 promises an engaging lineup of presentations, workshops, and discussions, offering a platform for students to explore, learn, and contribute to the world of physics.

The event was organised by the Department of Physics in association with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), Regional Council 17.
