Shillong, Nov 16: In what can transform weather forecast system in Meghalaya, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has installed an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at Mawsynram, currently recognised as the world’s wettest place.
The AWS, which will help monitor weather on a real-time basis, was inaugurated during a stakeholder workshop here on Friday to commemorate the IMD’s 150 years of service to the nation.
In his address, IMD’s director general of meteorology Dr M Mohapatra highlighted the evolution of IMD since its establishment in 1875, its advancements in weather forecasting, and the launch of ‘Mausamgram’, a tool for location-specific 10-day weather forecasts.
Expressing his gratitude to IMD for setting up the AWS, Rangbah Shnong of Mawsynram AL Shangpliang proposed a state-of-the-art weather observatory and exhibition center to attract tourists and educate the public.
He also offered land for the proposed project, demonstrating the local community’s support for advancing meteorological research, stated a press release.
The workshop organised by Meteorological Centre Shillong was also attended by Matsiewdor War Nongbri, secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management, Government of Meghalaya among others.
